ADHD-Informed Counselling and Psychotherapy in Edinburgh and Online
Support that meets you where you are – not where the world expects you to be.
Living with ADHD can feel like running a marathon with your shoelaces tied together – exhausting, confusing, and often invisible to others. Whether you’ve been formally diagnosed or are beginning to recognise traits in yourself, it’s common to feel overwhelmed, scattered, or stuck in cycles of self-doubt.
At Room for Therapy, we offer ADHD-informed counselling and psychotherapy – safe, compassionate spaces where you can explore your experiences without judgement, gain greater self-understanding, and find ways of living that work for your brain, not against it.
Our therapists are not here to “treat” ADHD. We are here to support you in making sense of your experience, uncovering your strengths, and moving through the world with more clarity, confidence, and self-acceptance.
What Is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental difference that can affect attention, focus, emotional regulation and impulse control. But it goes far beyond being “distractible” or “hyper.”
Many adults with ADHD experience:
Intense emotions and mood swings
Chronic overwhelm or burnout
Time blindness or difficulties with organisation
Sensory sensitivity or executive functioning challenges
Low self-esteem from years of misunderstanding or masking
You might also experience incredible creativity, hyperfocus, intuitive thinking, or deep empathy – traits that often go unrecognised. Everyone’s experience of ADHD is different, and we hold space for that complexity.
According to the UK Adult ADHD Network, around 2.5% of UK adults have ADHD – though many are undiagnosed, especially women, non-binary people, and individuals whose traits don’t fit traditional stereotypes.
Common Signs ADHD Might Be Impacting You
You don’t need a diagnosis to recognise when something isn’t working. Many people come to us because they’re:
Feeling overwhelmed by daily life or small tasks
Struggling to stay organised or meet deadlines
Frequently losing focus or “zoning out”
Experiencing emotional intensity or difficulty calming down
Battling internal criticism or feelings of failure
Exhausted from masking or trying to “keep up” with others
Therapy can offer you space to pause, reflect, and build new tools – without shame or pressure.

FAQs
If you're considering therapy, it's natural to have questions. Below are answers to some of the most common queries about our approach and what to expect. If you don't find what you're looking for, feel free to get in touch.
Do I need a formal diagnosis to begin therapy?
No, you don’t need a formal ADHD diagnosis to access support. Many people begin therapy while exploring whether they may have ADHD or recognising traits in themselves. We’ll meet you wherever you are in your journey, with openness and curiosity.
Is ADHD therapy available online as well as in-person?
Yes – we offer both in-person sessions in Edinburgh and secure online therapy. We understand that different environments work better for different people, and we’re happy to talk through what feels most comfortable for you.
Can therapy help if I’m already diagnosed and know a lot about ADHD?
Absolutely. Therapy can be a space to reflect more deeply on how ADHD shows up in your life, process any past experiences or internalised messages, and explore strategies that genuinely work for you. We tailor support to your individual experience.
What does ‘neurodivergent-affirming’ mean in practice?
It means we see ADHD as a difference, not a deficit. We support you without trying to “fix” or change who you are. Our approach values your strengths, challenges, and lived experience – and centres your voice in the process.
